The development of strong legs, healthy joints, and a well-functioning immune system begins long before the foal takes its first steps. For serious breeders, it is well known that nutrition during pregnancy plays a decisive role in the foal’s future health and durability. Already in the mare’s womb, the foundation is laid for organ development, skeletal strength, and growth – and the mare’s diet is one of the most important tools in this process.
The final months are crucial
During the last third of pregnancy, around 75% of the fetus’s total growth occurs. At the same time, the mare prepares her body for lactation and begins building up the antibodies that will later be transferred via colostrum. Nutritional requirements increase significantly, particularly in terms of energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals.
Certain trace elements, such as copper and zinc, are especially critical. The mare’s milk naturally contains levels that are too low to fully meet the foal’s needs after birth. Therefore, it is crucial that the foal has time to build up its own reserves in the liver before birth via the umbilical cord. These reserves are used during the first months of life and are strongly linked to healthy skeletal and joint development, as well as a reduced risk of growth-related problems such as OC/OCD.
Protein, energy, and vitamin E
Feed analyses and research show that the energy and protein levels in forage often vary greatly and are not always sufficient for pregnant and lactating mares. Protein is particularly important during this period, especially the availability of essential amino acids that support fetal growth and the mare’s milk production.
Vitamin E also plays a central role – for muscles, the immune system, and colostrum quality. Combined with the right fatty acids and a balanced mineral profile, the conditions are created for a strong and vital foal.
Thoughtful support – Pavo Podo®Lac
For pregnant and lactating mares, Pavo has developed Pavo Podo®Lac, a pelleted feed specially adapted for this demanding period. The feed provides highly bioavailable forms of copper, zinc, and manganese, a correct calcium/phosphorus ratio, and extra magnesium. All tailored to the needs of the mare and the developing fetus.
Pavo Podo®Lac is part of the Pavo Podo® concept, a long-term nutritional program that follows the horse from the fetal stage through foalhood and young horse development, with a particular focus on bone and joint development. Here, Podo®Lac is the very first step, laying the foundation even before the foal is born.
From pregnancy to lactation
Pavo Podo®Lac is used from the 9th month of pregnancy, or earlier if additional support is needed for the mare’s body condition, and continues throughout the lactation period. The feed helps keep the mare in optimal breeding condition while supporting maximum and nutrient-rich milk production.
Proper nutrition during pregnancy and lactation is not a detail – it is an investment in the future. By providing the mare with a well-balanced and targeted nutritional program, the best possible conditions are created for a healthy, strong, and durable foal. Pavo Podo®Lac has been developed precisely with this long-term perspective in mind.
